Baxter Names VPs
Baxter International, a healthcare company in Deerfield, Ill., has appointed Robert H. Armstrong to the newly created position of VP, research and development, medical devices and adjacent disposables. He is responsible for developing a new R&D Device Center of Excellence. Before joining Baxter, Mr. Armstrong spent more than 20 years at GE Healthcare, most recently as general manager of R&D for CT products, positron emission technology, and nuclear medicine. He has an MBA from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and a B.S. in physics from St. Norbert College. Baxter also has hired Steven Caffe, M.D., as VP of global regulatory affairs and medical vigilance. Dr. Caffe most recently served as U.S. deputy head of regulatory development at Sanofi-Aventis. He earned his M.D. from the Universite Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris. Dr. Sol J. Barer Robert J. Hugin Celgene Plans Transition Sol J. Barer, Ph.D., has been named CEO of Celgene, Summit, N.J., an integrated pharmaceutical company. Dr. Barer will succeed John W. Jackson on May 1, 2006. Mr. Jackson will remain chairman of Celgene’s board of directors. Dr. Barer has been a member of the Celgene leadership team since its incorporation in 1986. He has served as president and chief operating officer since 1994. He holds a Ph.D. in organic and physical chemistry from Rutgers University. Additionally, Celgene has appointed Robert J. Hugin to president and chief operating officer. He also assumes his new position on May 1, 2006. Mr. Hugin joined Celgene in 1999 as senior VP and chief financial officer. He has an A.B. from Princeton University and an MBA from the University of Virginia. Dr. Joseph S. Barone Dr. Laurence Downey Solvay Hires and Promotes Joseph S. Barone, M.D., has been named VP of drug safety and surveillance for Solvay Pharmaceuticals, Marietta, Ga., a research-driven pharmaceutical company. In addition to leading the U.S. drug safety and surveillance department, Dr. Barone oversees and directs all postmarketing adverse event collection, evaluation, and reporting activities. Most recently, he was employed by Daiichi Medical Research. He has a medical degree from Cornell University Medical College. Additionally, Laurence Downey, M.D., has been named president and CEO. He succeeds Harold H. Shlevin, Ph.D., who has taken on a position of global responsibility within the Solvay Group. A 25-year veteran of the company, Dr. Downey most recently served as president and CEO of Solvay Pharma in Canada. He has a medical degree from the University of Manchester and a diploma in pharmaceutical medicine from the Royal College of Physicians. Dr. Sef Kurstjens Astellas Appoints U.S. R&D Head Sef Kurstjens, M.D., Ph.D., has been named senior VP of research and development at Astellas Pharma US, Deerfield, Ill., a research-based pharmaceutical company and a subsidiary of Tokyo-based Astellas Pharma. In this role, Dr. Kurstjens oversees the company’s U.S.-based product development efforts. He previously held positions of increasing responsibility at Pfizer Global Research and Development in both Europe and the United States. Dr. Kurstjens has advanced degrees in medicine and experimental physiology from University of the Witwatersrand Medical School in Johannesburg. Dean Slack King Builds Team King Pharmaceuticals has appointed Dean Slack as VP of business development and strategy for its international and strategic marketing research department. Based in Bristol, Tenn., King is a vertically integrated branded pharmaceutical company. Mr. Slack was previously employed at GlaxoSmithKline. Bertrand Jr., has been promoted to senior VP, general counsel, secretary, and corporate compliance officer. Mr. Bertrand has held positions of increasing responsibility in MedImmune’s legal affairs department since 2001. He has a B.S. in biology from Wayne State University and a J.D., cum laude, from University of Wisconsin, Madison. MedImmune also has promoted Genevieve Losonsky, M.D., to VP of clinical development, infectious disease. Since joining the company in 2002, Dr. Losonsky has served as project director for several clinical programs involving MedImmune’s respiratory syncytial virus prevention franchise. In this new role, he leads Genentech’s commercial operations, including sales, marketing, managed care, commercial development, and commercial operations functions. He joined the company in January 2003 as senior VP and general manager of bio-oncology. Jennifer Cook, 40, has been promoted to the newly created position of VP of market development, responsible for managing market planning, forecasting and business analysis, pricing and publication strategy, international operations, and commercial communications. Ashraf Hanna, M.D., Ph.D., has been hired to the newly created position of VP of alliance management and pipeline strategy support, responsible for establishing, implementing, and evaluating alliance-management strategies and processes. Oswald has joined Genentech as VP of sales and marketing, tissue growth and repair. In this newly created position, he is responsible for sales and marketing for Lucentis, Lytics, Nutropin, and Pulmozyme. Mr. Oswald previously was senior VP of Novartis Ophthalmics North America. Genentech has appointed Robert S. Quinn as VP of corporate information technology (CIT), business and science applications. He focuses on a variety of IT solutions to support the corporate and commercial functions, as well as research and development. Mr. Herring continues to serve as Covance’s CEO. He has replaced Christopher A. Kuebler, who retired as chairman at the end of 2005.
